NYPLPCETC Printed Matter Edition
Epitome 1 & 2
Screenprint and giclee. 18"x24" (each). 2016.
NYPLPC Epitome 1. Chimera Barricade Sabot
Launched on the occasion of Art Basel 2017, this fundraising edition was realized as a pair of giclee prints with two-color silkscreen overlays, produced as part of the Eric Timothy Carlson’s ongoing ‘NYPLPC’ series in which he accumulates and sequences found imagery sourced from the New York Public Library Picture Collection.

The first of Carlson’s two prints, NYPLPC Epitome 1. Chimera Barricade Sabot, combines an evocative set of visual elements that illustrate various systems/symbols of control met by acts of resistance. An engraving of an Egyptian criosphinx (the body of a lion, with the head of a lamb) is overlaid with an illustration of a traditional wooden shoe – a ‘sabot’, with roots to the word ‘sabotage’ – shown crushing a rattlesnake. A second paired image features another depiction of a sphinx – this time from a Late Imperial Chinese brush painting – which is laid across a photo depicting a worker uprising as they create a barricade out of the overturned vehicles.
Carlson’s second work, NYPLPC Epitome 2. I’m Hominini I’m L’Orange, is constructed in a similar way. The print features a color slide transparency of Lucy (Australopithecus), which is laid across an image of Pierrot the clown–dressed in a clergy-style white robe. Carlson seems to suggest again that culture is a transmission reaching back through all of human-scale time, and that it is one in a perpetual cycle of ruin and renewal. As Will Luckman writes of the series: “We interpret and synthesize the intentional and unintentional messages our ancestors have imperfectly advanced, guided by the contemporary culture in which we are immersed. Where historians fail, or when civilization falters, artists and shamans will pick up the thread.”

The two prints have been conceived as a diptych. Placed side by side, the geometric screenprinted elements connect them into a single narrative work, in which two prevalent facets of the ‘NYPLPC’ project play off each other and create a new direction for meaning.

Giclee on hot press bright paper 330 gsm with two color silk screen print overlays. Available at Printed Matter

NYPLPCETC Mural Prints
Inkjet print (1 of 8)
34"x44"
2016
All images collected from the New York Public Library Picture Collection over the course of 2013, and was sequenced and designed 2014-2016. Though originally produced as a sequenced book, this project and collection of image has gone on to take many forms.
This iteration of the project, produced for Printed Matter’s 2016 Art Basel installation, is a deconstruction of the original 400 page NYPLPCETC book created to provide an experience of the entirety of this collection at once despite being abstracted by the layering of images.

PEOPLE Mask
2016
12"x12" Inches. Die cut offset print.
Mask created for the yet unnamed 'PEOPLE' happening that took place at Funkhaus and Michelberger Hotel in Berlin, Germany. All attendees were given a mask with ticket purchase and encouraged to wear throughout the event.
Created in collaboration with Azar Kazimir

PEOPLE Peace Mural
2017
20'x100' Feet. Enable paint on primed cotton muslin.
Based on a 2013 series of word paintings made on deconstructed pillow cases, an immense iteration of the PEOPLE painting was created in 2016 on the occasion of the yet unnamed 'PEOPLE' happening that took place at Funkhaus and the Michelberger Hotel in Berlin, Germany. A multitude of projects moving forward, under the ethos of widespread collaboration and multimedia experimentation, calcified under the banner taking form internationally as performances, festivals, a record label, books, a documentary, a magazine, a music streaming catalog, and more. The threat of litigation from Time Warner Entertainment (People Magazine) forced the legal name to change to 37d03d.
This is the second large scale iteration of this mural, created in 2017 on a metal garage. The inverted orientation is a call back to the original idea for this word painting – PEOPLE painted upside down: proposed, but never realized – as a mural at Cafetto Cafe in Minneapolis Minnesota.

Two Apollo
Pioneer Works
Brooklyn, NY. 2016.
Named after a the address of Carlson's small work-form-home studio apartment in Brooklyn from which he was evicted, the exhibition 2 Apollo was built around ideas of the intertwined forces of living, working, and dwelling. Composed of drawings, sculpture, furniture, and collected objects, the installation was both made in and of the actual studio apartment. The central component is the temporary acrylic wall that separated the bed from the desk, and though functionally 'a wall' in its previous state, its temporary nature allowed it to be an object as much as a space.

PEOPLE Peace Mural
2016
30'x100' Feet. Latex paint on primed cotton muslin.
Based on a 2013 series of word paintings made on deconstructed pillow cases, and previous ideation for a mural on the side of Cafetto Cafe in Minneapolis in 2010, this immense painting was created in 2016 on the occasion of the yet unnamed 'PEOPLE' happening that took place at Funkhaus and Michelberger Hotel in Berlin, Germany.

Organ House | Silent Barn Residency
2014
Silent Barn. Brooklyn, New York.
Installation after a six month residency in the basement of the Silent Barn, an art space, DIY venue, living space, and community center in Bushwick.

The basement when provided was nearly full of unmanaged storage, much of which abandoned or damaged beyond repair. After organizing the functional storage into the front of the space, a passage was created leading into depths of the basement where one could find a white washed gallery/studio, albeit with open sewage pipes. The installation therein was created entirely out of the waste and disregarded material gathered in the organization process.
